The burial of the deceased needs to be reported to the operator after the death has been determined and confirmed in writing by the appropriate medical authority in accordance with the regulations.
The operator and the person who pays for the funeral agree on the location for the new grave plot before the funeral service.
If the burial is made into the already existing grave, the person who pays for the funeral (if this is not the same person as the person who leases the grave) has to present the contract of a leas with the written permission of the person who leases the grave that he or she allows for the deceased to be buried in this grave, unless the deceased is the person who leases the grave himself.
The remains of the deceased, whose burial will be in a casket, and the cremated remains of the deceased, whose burial will be in an urn, are kept in the facilities intended for this purpose.
The operator of a cemetery places the remains of the deceased into the mourning chamber on the day of the funeral between 7 and 8 AM.
The remains of the deceased can be placed in the mourning chamber in Pobrežje or any other cemetery also one day before the funeral before 4 PM.
Burial festivity
Each deceased person must be ensured a decent funeral in accordance with his or her will or the will of the relatives or the person who pays for the funeral.
The burial festivity is carried out in accordance with the regulations of this decree and the agreement among the relatives and the operator of the cemetery or the contractual operator about the manner of preparation and leading the burial festivity.
The burial festivity may hold the characteristics of a ceremony of a particular religious community. In this case the burial festivity is carried out together with the religious ceremony.
Every person who acts appropriately to the time and place can participate with the public burial festivity.
The place, day, and time of the funeral is set by the operator and the person who pays for the funeral contractually, taking into consideration the principle of continuing plan of funerals.
The person who pays for the funeral can choose the manner of the parting ceremony:
- parting from the departed and the burial as a joint ceremony;
- parting from the departed and the burial as two separate ceremonies;
- silent burial (the burial within the family circle);
- anonymous burial.
The operator, if so agreed with the person paying for the funeral, may place the mourning book in the mourning chamber or in the parting hall by the departed person.
Joint ceremony
Joint ceremony is carried out from Monday to Friday between 12 AM and 3.30 PM in the summer period and from 12 AM to 3 PM in the winter period.
Joint ceremony consists of two parts:
- parting from the deceased person and
- the burial.
The parting from the deceased is led by the leader of the funeral, who is appointed by the operator of the cemetery.
The parting ceremony begins with the naming of the funeral leader.
By the head of the casket are the family members of the deceased person.
Behind them are the funeral leader, speakers, flag bearer with the Slovene flag and the mourning band, flag bearers with other flags and banners, medal and order bearers, also singers, and representatives of religious communities with the bearer of a religious symbols, if present.
At the beginning of the parting ceremony a dirge is played, which can be played by a band or it can be taken care of by the operator and the singers sing if they are present.
After the introductory dirge speakers give their speeches, a dirge is played and the singers sing if they are present. A greeting with the Slovene flag and mourning band follows, other flags and banners and the honorary salvo if the funeral involves the guard of honor.
During the dirge, the operator’s workers take the casket or the urn to the place of the burial.
At the lead of the funeral procession is the leader of the funeral, the flag bearer holding the Slovene flag with the mourning band, who are followed by flag bearers of other flags and banners, the band and singers if present, representatives of religious communities with bearers of religious insignias, a hearse with wreaths, if present also bearers of medals and awards belonging to the deceased, a hearse with the casket or bearers of the urn and urn wreath, the deceased’s nearest relatives and at the end, all other participants of the funeral.
The remains may also be carried by a group of community members if this is agreeable to the nearest relatives of the deceased and is agreed upon with the operator in advance.
If the funeral is attended by the representatives of Slovene military or police units, they may walk immediately after the leader of the funeral and the flag bearer or as their regulations may require.
When the funeral procession reaches the place of the burial, the leader of the funeral appoints the participants to the appropriate places. Pall-bearers, who place the flower wreaths onto the grave and place the casket or urn into the grave hole – horizontally, when the dimensions of the grave allow for it – move away after the common greeting. The speeches of the speakers follow, the choir sings or/and the band plays, if present. The religious ceremony may be performed. This concludes the funerary ceremony.
After the end of the funerary ceremony a march-past of the participants by the grave hole may follow and they may throw a clod of earth or a flower into the hole.
If the funeral is attended by the honor guard with military or hunting weapons to fire an honorary salvo as the final greeting to the departed, they have to ensure a complete safety of the people, for which the commander or the leader of the unit is responsible.
Where the funerary ceremony involves a departed foreigner, the Slovene flag with the mourning band is replaced by a black flag.
The parting as two separate ceremonies
The parting and the burial may be performed as two separate ceremonies.
The day and the hour of an individual ceremony is set by the operator and the person paying for the funeral.
How the parting ceremony is carried out is set by the regulations of the Act about the parting ceremony.
How the burial ceremony is carried out is set by the regulations of the Act about the burial ceremony. The burial ceremony is commenced by the lifting of the casket or urn from the mourning chamber.
Parting from the deceased, as a separate ceremony, may by carried out from Monday to Friday between 4 PM and 7 PM in the parting hall at the cemetery Dobrava, in the mourning chamber at Pobrežje, or in or in front of the mourning chambers on any other cemetery. For the departed who are to be cremated, the parting ceremony may be carried out prior or after the cremation.
Silent funeral
The ceremony of silent funeral is carried out on the basis of the decision made by the person paying for the funeral upon filing for the funeral.
For the silent funeral the regulations of the Act about funerary ceremonies are used accordingly.
The operator may not release any information regarding the silent funeral to the public.
Anonymous funeral
The ceremony of an anonymous funeral may be carried out at the cemetery Dobrava and is performed in such a way that the ashes are scattered on the grass field prepared especially for this purpose or an urn may be buried into a specially prepared hole covered with grass.
An anonymous funeral is carried out by the operator in the presence of the nearest relatives or without, in accordance with the agreement with the person paying for the funeral.
The place of burial carries no commemorating notice. The place of burial is noted in the record about the deceased buried in the cemetery.
The person paying for the funeral may choose a parting ceremony if he or she so desires.
The scattering of the ashes at the sea
Funeral services Maribor in cooperation with the funeral service of Public utility company Koper enables the organization of scattering the ashes of the deceased at sea. Funeral services Maribor upon agreement with the relatives drafts a written application for the execution of the scattering of ashes at sea and takes care of all the necessary formalities regarding the scattering at sea.
It takes approximately 5 days to acquire the suitable permits. The scattering is carried out only on Mondays at the peer in Valdoltra starting at 8 AM. The number of participants is limited to 30 people. In case of windy weather and therefore the restless sea, the scattering is carried out the following day or upon agreement between the ship-owner and relatives. The day before the scattering we are in constant contact with the relatives and the ship-owner, who confirms or refuses the sail after the careful revision of the weather prognostics.
The mourning protocol of scattering the ashes at sea:
- the entry of funeral party with the urn and urnal wreath onto the boat;
- the descend of the national flag to half the pole;
- the entry of the deceased’s relatives into the boat;
- the sail toward the point of scattering;
- the boat is anchored at the point of scattering;
- the boat’s bell rings three times;
- the mourning speech of the protocol leader;
- the scattering of ashes into the sea;
- the bow of the mourning crew;
- the boat’s siren horns three times;
- the raising of the flag;
- the return to the port.
If so desired by the relatives, the protocol may include a priest, a speaker, a trumpet player, and singers. If so agreed or desired by the person who orders the scattering, the boat may offer a small banquet on the return sail back to the port.
After the scattering, in remembrance the relatives are presented with a pergamona with the charted coordinates of the point where the ashes have been scattered.
At the cemetery Škocjan in Koper, there will be a monument raised shortly that will symbolize the scattering of ashes. If so desired by the relatives, the name of the departed may be written on a special slab and attached to the afore-mentioned monument.
The price of the scattering service including VAT is 900,00 EUR. This price includes: the renting of an urn for the scattering, the crew with the protocol, the acquisition of the necessary documentation, local transportation, services of the ship owner and the manufacturing of a special urnal wreath (which sinks to the bottom of the sea after 10 minutes). It is forbidden to throw flowers or candles into the sea. To this price needs to be added the costs of cremation and transportation of the urn to the funeral service, which carries out the entire protocol.
